Seattle Sounders’ Road to the MLS Cup Final
The Seattle Sounders grabbed the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference to finish the regular season. They had 16 wins, 10 losses, and 8 draws, which earned them 56 points. Although good, it was a far cry from the dominating 72-point regular season had by LAFC. That didn’t matter come the Western Conference Finals, though, but we’ll get to that in a minute.
Seattle matched up with FC Dallas in the first round of the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs. Dallas gave Seattle a run for its money by pushing the Sounders to extra time, but Seattle ultimately came out on top 4-3 thanks to a third goal in the match from Jordan Morris. Seattle then faced Real Salt Lake in the second round and made fairly easy work of them 2-0 to set up a Conference Finals match with top-seeded LAFC.
For the first time in the playoffs, Seattle played away from home when they took on LAFC. Although LAFC went up early with a goal from Eduard Atuesta, it was all Seattle from there, anchored by the play of Raul Ruidiaz. Within minutes of LAFC’s opening goal, Ruidiaz quickly scored to equalize and Nicolas Lodeiro added the go-ahead goal. Seattle took a 2-1 into halftime and then Ruidiaz added another goal in the second half. Ultimately, the Sounders went on to win 3-1 and that’s what brought them back to the MLS Cup final.

Toronto FC’s Road to the MLS Cup Final
Toronto FC earned the No. 4 seed from the Eastern Conference, thanks to a regular season record of 13 wins, 10 losses, and 11 draws that gave them 50 points. Although D.C. United also finished with the same points and wins, Toronto FC took the higher seed as a result of goal differential. That allowed Toronto to host the first-round playoff match against D.C. United.
In the first round, Toronto beat D.C. United by a score of 5-1, but, if you can believe it, four of Toronto’s five goals came in extra time. It was 1-1 after 90 minutes and then Toronto exploded for four goals in extra time to get the win. That opening-round game was the only time Toronto was at home during the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs, though. From there, they traveled to New York City to take on NYCFC and then down to Georgia to face off against Atlanta United FC.
NYCFC was the top seed in the Eastern Conference and one of the favorites to win it all, but Toronto played very well on the road and won the match 2-1 behind two goals from Alejandro Pozuelo. That led Toronto down to Atlanta to take on the defending MLS Cup champions. In a tough environment at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Toronto went down 1-0 within minutes of the game starting, but they quickly answered and went into halftime tied at 1-1. In the 78th minute, Nick DeLeon ripped one into the upper corner past Brad Guzan. The goal propelled Toronto to another tough road victory and onto the MLS Cup.
2019 MLS Cup Preview
These two teams are no strangers to deep postseason runs and no strangers to competing against each other for the most coveted prize in American soccer. In fact, it’s the third time in four seasons that Seattle and Toronto have met in the finals for the MLS Cup. Those meetings came in 2016 and 2017, with both being played in Toronto at BMO Field. Seattle won the MLS Cup in 2016, and Toronto got revenge by winning in 2017.
Both of these squads have been a measure of class in the MLS, and we can expect a hard-fought battle between the two come Sunday, November 10. Both teams are extremely solid, battled tough roads to get to the MLS Cup, are bolstered by loads of experience, and have recent history with one another.
In the two most recent meetings between these sides, Seattle has come out on top. They won 3-2 over Toronto back in April 2019, and then last season, in May, Seattle topped Toronto 2-1.
Seattle score 52 and conceded 49 goals in the regular season. In the playoffs, the Sounders found the back of the net 9 times while letting up 4 goals. On the other side, Toronto scored 57 and conceded 52 goals in the regular season. In the postseason, Toronto scored 9 times and allowed 3 goals.
For the Sounders, it’s been the team’s play up top that has been the most impressive. Morris, Ruidiaz, and Lodeiro have all performed very well and we can’t really expect anything else other than they’ll do the same in the MLS Cup. Morris and Ruidiaz lead the entire playoffs with 3 goals each, and then Lodeiro is right behind with 2 of his own. The one negative that might be said about this is that all of Morris’ goals came in Seattle’s opening-round matchup against Dallas, whereas Ruidiaz and Lodeiro scored in multiple matches. That said, the trio has played very well and it’s good to see them share the load. Ruidiaz was especially instrumental in Seattle’s victory over LAFC. Not only did he score twice, but he was an absolute havoc to LAFC to deal with.
On Toronto’s side, DeLeon, Pozuelo, and Jonathan Osorio have each scored twice. It was a question how well Toronto would perform up top without Jozy Altidore, who has missed postseason action due to a hamstring injury, but Toronto has done well without him. It’s still unknown if Altidore will be able to go for the MLS Cup or not. If he does, it might be best to allow him to come on as a substitute rather than shake up the chemistry the others have built during this run. A late-subbing Altidore, if healthy, could provide the spark Toronto might need deep into the match.
We shouldn’t overlook the form that Toronto was in entering the playoffs. To finish where they did on the table, Toronto put together a 10-game unbeaten streak to close out the regular season. That’s after they started the 2019 campaign very slow and many thought they might be sitting outside the postseason line when it was all said and done. The rally pushed them forward and it doesn’t appear as thought Toronto is willing to give up anytime soon.
With the way that Toronto has gone on the road against both NYCFC and Atlanta United, we like their chances against Seattle. They took out top-seeded NYCFC in New York in what was a fairly dominating performance and then held Josef Martinez scoreless when they defeated Atlanta in the next round. The win against Atlanta was likely even more impressive than taking out NYCFC because of the tough environment that game was played in and the fact that Martinez had a penalty kick early on when Atlanta was already up 1-0. The PK was saved and ignited Toronto’s comeback.
Prediction: Seattle Hoists the MLS Cup
Both Seattle and Toronto put on outstanding performances in the Conference Finals against very good teams with a lot of offense firepower, so we should expect solid defending all around in the MLS Cup.
We feel the difference will be Ruidiaz and Lodeiro, though. These two have been playing incredibly in the playoffs and we can’t see them taking a step back at all, especially at home in Seattle. Morris can also provide quite the offense for Seattle, which puts Toronto in a tough spot against this three-headed monster, especially when it comes to any sort of counterattack. This one should go back and forth a bit in terms of possession, but the Seattle counterattack is as lethal as they come and we could see it playing into Toronto’s unwillingness to get aggressive when they need to.
Although both of these teams have averaged 3 goals per match in the postseason, this one will likely be much more lower scoring than that. Of course, the more goals that are scored the more entertaining this will be for us viewing from the outside of the pitch, but we look to Toronto to want to grind things out and Seattle to push but not overdo it.
We like Seattle to win the MLS Cup in a 2-0 or 2-1 win over Toronto, and we’d rather bet the Sounders to win in 90 minutes plus stoppage time so we can get a better price.
